Ponte City in Johannesburg was once notorious for crime and poverty. Now, it’s home to @DlalaNje , a social enterprise that’s providing opportunities for children and teens, while challenging perceptions of the neighbourhood through its tours. CEO Grant Ngcobo tells us more.

An amazing building, an architectural wonder. I did the Ponte challenge (climbed to the 54th floor) over the long weekend hosted by @DlalaNje . Highly recommended.

Ponte 😍 . It’s a residential area now and there is a company named @DlalaNje which deals with tours around the building and surrounding areas. They can give one more information about it’s history and probably purpose as well. 🤏🏾

Look at this light fitting in the @dlalanje community centre at Ponte. Thank you to our fabulous guides. We spoke about community, environment, plastic and life in the city. The light is made out of recycled plastic, obvs! #plastic #dlalanje #johannesburg

So informative, wonderful tour guide, and a great way to learn more about the surrounding areas and the long lasting impacts of apartheid policy. DlalaNje are on an amazing mission to keep the local kids off the streets and give them access to vital education. A must do when visiting Jo’Burg.

This tour was amazing. Our guide, Cynthia was extremely knowledgable and took the time to explain the history of the building, the local area around it and the current status of it today. There was also plenty of time to get some excellent photos. This is a non profit organisation and the money from the tours goes to fjr community centre in the building which is designed to keep kids off the streets and out of trouble. So it’s a great cause. Cynthia also took the time to make sure me and the other guy on the tour left the building safely which was very much appreciated. They really do care about their clients. Excellent. Cheers, Cynthia and team!

We visited Dlala Nje for the Ponte Experience tour and cannot recommend it highly enough! Our guide toured us through the tower and gave us a fascinating synopsis of the local neighborhood’s history from what has to be the vest viewpoint in Johannesburg. Additionally, Ponte city is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of architecture, and has a backstory as complex as the city itself.

Thank you very much for the team of Dlala Nje (Alvaro, Prince & Kia) to let us explore Johannesburg like we could never do on our own. It is eye opening and quite fun. Even if Hillbrow is an unsafe neiborhood, I never felt unsafe during the visit. The This is Hillbrow tour includes the visit of Ponte Tower and the meal is in the penthouse with the gorgeous view. Go with an open mind…

South Africa’s notorious Ponte tower becomes symbol of urban revitalization
The high life in Hillbrow - It feels like any other neighbourhood, not the drug-ridden hellhole of its reputation.

We joined the three hours Hillbrow walking tour yesterday and are so happy we did this! Such an enriching experience to stroll through Barea and Hillbrow and learn more about the daily life of people living there. We felt totally safe with them by our sides and the time rather felt like a day with friends. This tour is a must for everyone who is thrilled to get a real life experience!

The revival of Ponte is a potent symbol of Johannesburg’s renewal - From yuppie icon to slum and back
South Africa's "Hell Tower" becomes a tourist attraction - After apartheid, criminal gangs took over the Ponte. Today the building is a popular destination.
